Teaching 2-D shapes for grade Two

Over view

The world we live is a result of constant change. What might be there one day is never there the next. Look at what had happened with Covid-19.

The changes that we have all born witness represent a significant period in our lives. For me, these changes have been technological in their nature. With most of the world in lock-down, due to the pandemic, people are working from home in an online format, and parents are picking up the slack from teachers and supporting their children

Furthermore, it is important to acknowledge that students are already interested and engaged in using technology, this creates many amazing opportunities for schools and teachers to benefit from integrating some forms of technology in the classroom and to make teaching and learning more effective.

In this blog, I will be emphasizing on teaching the grade two students on the topic 2-D shapes (shapes, sides and vertices) under the subject mathematics. I have used the voice over ppt as the ICT tool for teaching my students. Unlike other voice-over ppt were it consists of information and just explaining, here I have emphasized using interesting animations.

Creation of the teaching material

If I share on how I have made my teaching material, first of all I selected the topic that intrigued me and that I thought that topic can be made interesting to my students. After that I referred teacher’s manual and text book of class two to bring connection with my chosen topic. Then I browsed internet to check related information and video tutorial as a supplementary guide to accomplish my material in fruitful one.

With the idea abstracted from internet, I decided to make my teaching material as a video tutorial at first. But after realizing that I have made video tutorial using Camtasia  8 in my early post, directly I do away with the idea and made my mind set to prepare ppt and do with voice-over.

Therefore, I prepared ppt by inserting necessary information in the slides and even inserted animation. Inserting animation was the biggest challenges though as I have to apply for each and every information and to the emphasized one. Besides that the timing for animation has to be set like when to appear and when to disappear with the correct narrations. The background music was also inserted because at first when I tried doing voice-over without background music, it seemed plan and quite boring. So to bring life in my teaching learning material I immersed using background music so that it can also boost the energy of my students towards learning.

when it come to an activity, I have created quiz using ict tool as google form. To create quiz first we have to have Gmail account or we can either directly search google form from the website. Then from the Gmail account I went to google app and from their I chose the 'forms' and started creating quiz.

Instructions for the use of content-based material

The material will be used while delivering the content in lesson development. It can also be used in lesson closure to conclude the lesson. Nevertheless, the material will used by student as and when they carry out an activity.

To use this created material, first teacher will upload the material in Google classroom. In the session students have to visit their google classroom and first they have to download the materials. After downloading each student will get access to the voice over ppt. In order to watch and listen to the ppt, first and foremost thing student have to do is to put slide show mode. Under the ppt or on top of tool bar in desktop there is slide show icon, so teacher will show and guide the students fully to use ict information in the meantime of teaching subject based content.

In the Google classroom, under the uploaded ppt there will be also one file uploaded in order to carry out an activity.

Activity instructions: For the activity, I have created Quiz on the topic that I have covered and it consist around five questions. All the questions are compulsory and it is all  choosing

Teaching letters of alphabets and the phonic of the consonants

Teaching letters of alphabets and the phonic of the consonants

Teaching letters of the alphabets and the phonics of the consonants

“A gem of a short film has a sense of pure joy in animation that is different from anything you see in a feature film and when given an opportunity, deliver excellence and never quit.” So, I created my own short teaching and learning video tutorial with my fullest interest and dedication though it wasn’t to the perfection. But I assure that it will aid my students to learn with fun.

1.      Short descriptions about the material

This video tutorial on the topic “letters of the alphabets and sounds of the consonants” for grade PP under the subject English is constructed to develop basic skills (listening, observing, speaking, writing and reading) needed in their upper grades or for their lifetime. Students will use the skills like listening, observing, speaking, writing and reading to upgrade their level as well as develop holistic development of each student with the use of these five skills.

2.      Description on how I created this materials

In the process of creation of this material, I have used some of the ICT tools such as Power Point Presentation and the different features from Power Point Presentation like shapes, animations, and effects. Nevertheless, I made best used of Camtasia 8 to produce and edit my video.

In the initial steps I have done concept mapping on the topic that my module tutor gave assigned with. After that, looking at the mapping I try to gather the pictures, background sound that suites to my rhyme, appropriate information respected to the consonants and other required materials. In the second place I have started working with the slides by organizing the information and laying my ideas on the sides. As and when I lay my ideas, I found that some pictures can be drawn by me so, I drew myself and asked my friends that whether my drawing can make sense to my students or can they really recognize the pictures and connect with the realistic things that they have already seen. To request, my friends also comment on my drawing like some looks so realistic and exact but for some drawing though you drew so beautifully with your hardest work but as it is complicated it do not look like realistic one. Reflecting and analyzing on my friends comment I omit the drawing that does not like realistic and kept only the one which looks realistic because I believe primary grade students learn betters if we could connect or show them with the realistic objects with respect to the letters or consonants that I am going to teach.

With that, I inserted relevant background music and inserted animations. Where my information can zoom in or appear as and when I wanted. For some, I have also emphasis on the important information I wanted to let my students to look carefully or to concentrate more on the emphasized one. Having emphasis on the information or any important thing is very advanced to help our students keep in focus to the lesson that we intend to impart to our students. To complete this ppt slides I took almost three days and it’s worth working. After that I recorded the video using Camtasia 8 by singing rhyme and some explanation was also done in between. Then necessary edition has done looking for the perfection. While editing video the most challenging part was my background music as it seems to be louder then the narration voice. I tried lower the background music to the level of 1% though it's still louder.

Where, when and how am I going to use this material in the teaching and learning process

The created material will be used in the classroom teaching and learning for the grade PP while teaching “letters of the alphabets and the sounds of the consonants”. It can be also used as supplementary information to carry out activity in the class and at their working place like at home. It can also be referencing while preparing for the exam and this particular material or video can be used as their entertainment during recess hour or during pleasure time as it is rhyme with music.

As a teacher of grade PP I will use this material in the lesson introduction as an attention grabber of my students. Singing this rhyme before really going into the lesson will boost their energy and teacher can ingest energy and enthusiasm towards the topic. This material can also be used in the lesson development as well a brain break to students to refresh and get rid of the drowsiness.

Material will be presented in the class by teacher and teacher can also upload in the online class forum (goggle classroom, class Dojo telegram, WhatsApp and WeChat) whichever is convenient.

Instructions on how to use material by students

The video tutorial will be uploaded in the class Dojo. So, in order to do an activity or homework students will first down load the video. After that, watch the video till the end. At the end of the video there are few questions for students to complete. If the students are not clear about the sound or consonant letters, then always pause the video and watch again. Even pausing doesn’t work then watch the video or listen to the rhyme again and again. This is the charm of video tutorial as students have full control of the teacher like if the concept in unclear students can always rewind the video and if emergency occurs they can always pause the video and watch when they have time.

Teaching on Compound Words

Teaching Compound words through Video

Overview

In this PowerPoint presentation, I chose Compound Words as my topic for grade II students. The subject is English, I developed this video by gathering all required materials from various sources. In the process of developing, I didn’t forget to integrate some of the content material. This video not only contains the content information on ‘Compound Words’ but also contains small activity.

Description on how I created the material

I created this material using the ICT tool Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. Unlike my previous materials, first thing I did was ‘brainstorming’ on the topic I have chosen for relevant grade level. I roughly made my mind map and noted down required and relevant information. Next, I scanned thoroughly on which and how many things should include in this simulation.

After listing all required things I drew some pictures and difficult to draw are being downloaded from google chrome. To make this simulation more interesting and attractive, I looked for background music. Subsequently, I planed which information should put first along with the relevant pictures. Then I insert the picture with the text and even look for relevant animations. Accordingly I also inserted my voice over on the simulation and converted to video. I was done creation of content material; I prepared a small activity for students. (It’s a guessing and writing compound words) activity. I have put six set where I have given pictures and they have to guess the new words looking at two pictures. After guessing for a minute, they have to click on the pictures and the two pictures will be slide aside. Then they will see new picture and under that there will be blank so they have to fill up with the new compound word.

When, where and how I will use this learning material in teaching and learning?

This content material will be one of the most interesting and worth learning for children. We know there are diverse learners where some learn best through auditory, some through visual, and some kinesthetic. So, to meet these needs I as a teacher will use this video during lesson development and during activity to guide them. Not only that, the develop material can be used during lesson conclusion to summarize or to reiterate the lesson that we have learned.   More over I would also prepare other more interesting activities for children. Example; I will design a bingo game, a domino game, or remember remember game for children so that they learn the best. I would also look for interesting activity like sorting and matching.

Instructions on how I am going to use this material

The main objective of the material is to put the concept of compound words and make familiarize students with the examples of creating compound words from the two different words. I as a teacher can show this own created examples and then definition of compound words.

Lastly, preparing this simulation was worth taking a long journey. Though the journey was not easy, not sweet, but I am confident to say that it helped me in moving a step ahead in my life. ‘It was worth exploring and learning’.

THANK YOU

Teaching 'Transportation' through Simulation

Teaching the Modes of Transportation” in Our Country through Simulation

In this blog, I will be writing on how to teach on the modes of transportation from the textbook of Social Studies, grade four integrating ICT. There are many interesting and useful topics in this text book.  However this particular topic “Transportation” appeals me the most as it is very significant and relevant to our daily activities. In addition, it is convenient to integrate ICT tools in effective way to teach about transportation because it is very inconvenient to take and show concrete about transportation in the classroom setting or it’s beyond out thought.

Therefore I decided to integrate one of the ICT tools in this topic and convey the content to my students. I also found that integrating ICT is always a plus point for teachers, facilitators’ learners and any other educators as it can capture the information in advance way (past, present, and future).

Creation of the teaching material

I have created the simulation in Microsoft power point presentation as a constructive tool on the topic “Transportation” for grade four under the subject social studies by making the best use all the features and tools. To accomplish my satisfying simulation, firstly, I chose an intriguing topic and grade level. Next I have gathered requisite ingredients like related pictures, GIF, and sound related to the topic from the Google and kept in one folder. Unlike other power point presentations, I started making the presentation/simulation in one slide which was challenging.

In the first slide, I inserted the shape ‘rectangle’ and then changed the colour from the ‘shape fill’ to create the background scene of my starting simulation. After that I inserted the text box to write text and followed by the inserting of related pictures. In between I have also looked at the colour combination of the text and the background scene. Soon after the slide accommodated enough information, I applied my own choice of animation to the pictures and to the text by clicking on the ‘Animation’ tool bar. At that instant, I also looked at the animation effect where I set the timing (delay and duration) and kept animation start with previous.

Chasing that, I have inserted again rectangle shape to make background scene as same as initial one and the colour was also same like before. Thenceforth the same step was followed but to insert sound/audio I clicked on insert tool bar where different options will be displayed and from that select audio option followed by selecting sound/audio from the correct file/desktop. Eventually I kept volume of the sound low from the ‘PLAY BACK’ tool bar. This process has been done till my content of the topic was completed.

At the end I opened the ‘animation pane’ to make the duration and time.  For the start under the ‘ANIMATION tool bar I selected ‘With Previous’ throughout the slide. After that I adjusted the pane to appear in sequence. I also added background music and kept the music volume low in order to have clear narration. Next, I dragged the music in the animation pane at the top. I also hide the sound icon from ‘Hide during the Show’ under ‘PLAYBACK tool bar’. I kept the option for this song to be played from beginning till the last slide’. I did my narration part at the end using ‘Record slide show’ option under record ‘SLIDESHOW’ tool bar. So these are all about how I created my simulation on ‘Transportation’. My simulation consist of six different modes of transportation, little bit of description and an activity to evaluate their learning.

Instructions for how, where and how to use the content-based material

With paradigm shift in 21st pedagogy of teaching and learning, the way teachers’ teaches should be more evolved and flow with the trends. Using simulation or integrating ICT will eventually fill-up the gap between traditional and current means of teaching and learning. So, using my developed simulation will help students to retain content information for the longer terms. This material will boost students’ interest to learn. It also helps in displaying past, present and future events so that learners will ingest all sort of wisdom.

After looking at the several advantages, I developed this simulation where I will use for conveying the content during lesson development. Unlike olden days where information is ingested by teacher just lecturing or following the same routine in the classroom every time by reading the text, I will use my simulation as an instructional and fundamental role to discourse the topic by letting them relate with that of their life. Using this will also create more engaging sensory experience. After that students will engage in doing activity. The activity instructions were also briefed in the simulation after the definition of transportation.

How to do an activity: Activity Instructions

This activity is mainly designed to check students understanding on the topic. There are set of questions and it consists of five different questions related to the content. An activity need to be carried out individually and need to be done in ‘Google Classroom’ and the instruction of activity will be instructed to students through simulation only.

I will also upload simulation developed in our ‘Google Classroom’ for students to refer and do their activity in ‘Google Classroom’ only.

Thank you.

Teaching names of domestic animals

Overview

Today’s digital children think of information and communications technology (ICT) as something akin to oxygen. They expect it. It’s what they breathe, and it’s how they live. They use ICT to meet, play, date, and learn. It’s an integral part of their social life. It’s how they acknowledge each other and form their personal identities. Furthermore, at the heart of effective technology integration, technology offers opportunities to actively involve in the learning experience. With this regard, I have created learning materials aiming to achieve needs of digital generation children. The learning material is mainly focus on English subject for grade “I” on the topic “Names of Domestic Animals”

Video for lesson input.                          Activity video.

Subject: English

Topic: Names of Domestic Animals

Class: I

Activity name: Who am I?

Creation of the materials

I created short animated video on domestic animals using power point presentation initially and then converted into window media format. When developing this simple video firstly, I collected all my necessary ingredients (appropriate pictures, relevant sound, and background scenery) to add flavor to my recipe. Nevertheless, I even inserted animation and done the voice over to the slide to make it more comprehensible to my students. Further, I even included activity that can be done only using ICT tools like listening to the sound of the animal make and then identify the correct animal. This activity is in the form of quiz and very interesting activity indeed.

When, where and how to use the material

This video will be used as a lesson input where students will enjoy learning and no one cease to learn. Viewing video will boost interest of every individual because it have a tendency to seize my children towards learning irrespective of different learning abilities (visual, auditory, kin-esthetic),  and it serves as a reading materials as well. Unlike discoursing of the lesson, this material will act as teacher in lesson input where the lesson was taught through video. For this particular class teacher can even take students in ICT lab and let them play with the monitor while learning this particular topic.

Learning through video has great merits because student can listen to audio, read the wordings, and they can even pause at any time if they lost in between. It will help them not only in content comprehension but also help in development of their cognitive, emotional and effective domain.

Instructions on how to use materials

This material is simple and effective for primary students to use. They can be access to computer lab in school to watch the video.  Now coming to an activity, I have designed in such a way that students have to use technology gadgets like either monitor, smart phone or their I-pad/tab to do the activity. The activity is on WHO AM I?  Where student have to look at the picture and then listen to the sound of the animal by pressing on the sound button. After that student have to choose the correct name of the animal from the pictorial option given below. Besides, the interesting thing about this activity is I have created hyperlink. Example; if student’s answer is correct then the applause emoticon with applause sound will appear. If answer is wrong, the sad face emoticon with beep buzzer will appear.

THIS ACTIVITY INTENDS TO MOTIVATE THE LEARNERS.

MORE INTERESTING ACTIVITIES WILL BE UPLOADED SOON. DO ENJOY AND DON’T FORGET TO VISIT MY BLOG MONTHLY 😊..

Thank you.
